(FROM A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO KNOWS THE GOOD SPOTS)

If you’re dreaming of an elopement that feels intimate, wildly beautiful, and a little adventurous—Alberta is basically showing off. From towering peaks to turquoise lakes to desert-like badlands, this province has a backdrop for every kind of love story.

I grew up in Canmore, Alberta, and spent my summers in the Drumheller and prairies with my Grandparents. As an elopement photographer, I’m lucky enough to explore these places at golden hour, in surprise snowstorms, and during those quiet weekday moments when it feels like the mountains are all yours. These are some of my favourite elopement locations in Alberta, and why they photograph like a dream.

Banff national park

Classic for a reason ✨

Banff is iconic—and somehow still magical every single time. Think dramatic mountain peaks, winding rivers, alpine meadows, and endless options within a short drive.

Why it’s amazing:

  • Tons of variety (lakes, forests, peaks, valleys)
  • Unreal light at sunrise and sunset
  • Easy to pair ceremony + adventure session

Photographer tip: Sunrise and sunset elopements here are *chef’s kiss — fewer people, softer light, and a quieter, more intimate vibe.

LAKE LOUISE AND MORAINE LAKE

Turquoise water dreams 💙

If you’ve ever saved a mountain photo on Pinterest… it was probably taken here. These lakes are unreal in person and photograph beautifully in any season.

Why couples love it:

  • Jaw-dropping colour and scale
  • Instantly recognizable scenery
  • Feels epic without needing a long hike

Good to know: Access requires some planning — but when it comes together, it’s so worth it. And good news - I have lots of experience with planning/coordinating in this area!

kananaskis country

Wild, quiet, and underrated 🌲

Kananaskis is where I go when couples want Banff vibes without Banff crowds. It’s raw, rugged, and incredibly versatile.

Why it’s a favourite:

  • Fewer people, more privacy
  • Lakes, peaks, and wide-open landscapes
  • Perfect for relaxed, adventurous elopements

Bonus: So many pull-off locations that still feel remote and cinematic.

CANMORE

Mountain town magic 🏔️

Canmore is perfect if you want epic views and a laid-back, stylish feel. The Three Sisters are an incredible backdrop, and the town itself adds charm.

Why it works so well:

  • Easy access + stunning scenery
  • Great for combining elopement + celebration dinner
  • Beautiful year-round (hello cozy winter elopements)

Bonus: Canmore is my hometown! I know it VERY well, and can take you to all of the best spots and hidden gems.

Drumheller and the badlands

Unexpected and wildly cool 🌵

Not into mountains? Alberta still delivers. The badlands are earthy, textured, and totally unique. For me, this area is especially close to my heart. I spent my summers here with my grandparents, wandering backroads, playing in the hoodoos, and learning to appreciate how powerful quiet landscapes can be.

Why this spot is special:

  • Completely different from the “typical” elopement
  • Warm tones and incredible sunsets
  • Perfect for couples who want something bold and unconventional

Bonus: The budget doesn't usually need to be as big for this area. Permits, vendors, hotels, etc., for the area are usually a bit less than the mountain locations.

THE PRAIRIES

Quiet, golden, and full of heart 🌾

The prairies don’t always get the spotlight, but they hold a kind of beauty that feels incredibly grounding and intimate. Wide-open skies, golden fields, long gravel roads, and sunsets that seem to go on forever—it’s simple, nostalgic, and deeply romantic. It’s a part of Alberta I know well, and one that’s perfect for couples who want something meaningful, unrushed, and a little bit unexpected.

Why the prairies make an incredible elopement location:

  • Endless sky and stunning light (hello, dramatic sunsets)
  • Total privacy and space to breathe
  • A timeless, documentary feel that lets the focus stay on you

Photographer tip: Windy and stormy days are actually a win here — movement in dresses, grasses, and clouds add so much emotion to photos.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re exchanging vows on a mountaintop, beside a glacier-fed lake, or in the middle of the badlands—Alberta has a location that fits your story. The best elopements aren’t about the biggest guest list or the fanciest setup—they’re about choosing a place that feels like you.

And if you’re feeling overwhelmed trying to choose? That’s where I come in 😉 I help couples find the perfect location, plan the timeline around the best light, and create a day that feels relaxed, intentional, and unforgettable.

These places aren’t just pretty backdrops to me — I grew up in these mountains, and spent my summers exploring the prairies and badlands. From sunrise hikes to dusty backroad adventures, I’ve been getting to know Alberta my entire life. It means I know when the light hits just right, which spots feel peaceful even in peak season, and where to go when you want something a little more off the beaten path.
